Summer 2019 |
Welcome to our Newsletter!FosterParentCollege.com (FPC) continues to grow and improve as we respond to our customers' needs. In this issue of our Solutions newsletter, we cover the new courses currently being produced, provide information about updates to the FPC online management system, and offer a tip on using the FPC website. We wish to thank everyone for their ongoing support of our website and the training we provide. |
Mental Health Needs of Children Entering Care: New Course Coming Soon!"Roughly 80% of the children in care have some mental health issues, and often we can diagnose more than one mental health disorder," says Dr. Robert Nickel, instructor for FPC's newest course, Children Entering Care: Mental Health Issues. |
Updates to the FPC Online Management SystemAt FPC we strive to listen and respond to the needs of the agencies that use our courses. A couple years ago, we launched our "Series" training program. This program allows agencies with unlimited accounts to create clusters of FPC pre-service courses and to schedule the clusters around in-person meeting times. With the Series program, agencies can track parents' progress through the courses, monitor test scores, and receive comments and questions from parents as they are viewing the course. |
Commercial Sexual Exploitation of Children in Care: New Course Coming This FallThere has been high interest in a course that addresses the needs of children in care who are impacted by sex trafficking. FPC has been working with Jennifer Shimer and Christine Keys of ABOVE the Path to create a course on the commercial sexual exploitation of children in care. ABOVE the Path is a co-author of Closing the Gap, a training designed to support caregivers in protecting children from child trafficking. This new FPC course will help caregivers understand why children in care are at risk for trafficking, warning signs that a child is vulnerable to trafficking or is being trafficked, and how they can provide support. |
Send a CommentWhether parents or agency staff members have just entered the FPC website, are viewing a course, or are working in the management system, they are able to easily contact FPC support staff. On every FPC web page, in the upper right-hand corner of the screen, there is a Send a Comment button. We encourage all parents and agency staff to use this button whenever they encounter a programming glitch or have a comment about a course. |
New Research Study!Foster Parent College has just begun our most recent study, which is on the new advanced parenting workshop, Problematic Sexual Behaviors. We have vastly improved the research system on our website, and now resource parents who may qualify for this study will automatically see a study announcement on their personal home page when they log in to FosterParentCollege.com. |
New Article on Noncompliant BehaviorSpeaking of studies, we recently published an article about our study of our advanced parenting workshop, Understanding Noncompliance, in the journal Children and Youth Services Review. Noncompliance and defiance is a common behavior problem faced by resource parents. When foster, adoptive, and kinship parents are able to help their children learn to cooperate and balance their needs with the needs of the family, the children's placement stability improves.

Closed Captioning FPC CoursesWith our dedicated team of programmers and staff, we have begun the process of adding closed captioning to all FPC courses, starting primarily with our pre-service courses. Courses that have closed captioning available will have a "CC" after the course title. |
