New Online Training Courses for Spanish-Speaking Foster, Kinship, and Adoptive Parents

July 11, 2023

Eugene, OR — Nationally, one in five children who live in foster care are Hispanic or Latino. Children’s services and agencies have recognized that youth generally do better when they join a kinship family or a nonrelative family of a similar culture, where the youth can maintain a strong cultural identity. These caregivers are required to have specialized caregiving training, and some caregivers learn better when the training is provided in Spanish. To help these parents receive the training they need, Foster Parent College has added two more Spanish-language courses to its online learning center, increasing the total to 22.

"All resource parents need specialized training to support the children in their care, especially on complex trauma, which impacts so many children in the child welfare system," said Lee White, President of Northwest Media, parent company of FosterParentCollege.com. "We are dedicated to providing resource parents who are more comfortable learning in Spanish with the tools they need to be effective caregivers."

Preparación de adolescentes para la educación superior cover
One of the two new courses is Preparación de adolescentes para la educación superior, which was translated from and dubbed over Preparing Teens for Postsecondary Education. Created in collaboration with John Burton Advocates for Youth, this course provides resource parents with the information needed to encourage their youth to plan and prepare for higher education, including college, trade school, and apprenticeships.

Es posible que sea TEAF? cover
Also newly available is ¿Es posible que sea TEAF?, which was translated from and dubbed over Could It Be FASD?. This course aims to build awareness of FASD for families who may be caring for a child impacted by prenatal alcohol exposure. It was created in collaboration with Kathryn Page, PhD, an adoptive parent of a child with FASD and former director of an FASD diagnostic clinic, and Robert Nickel, MD, a developmental pediatrician.

Since 2016, FosterParentCollege.com has been working with professional translator Omar Canals of VOICE, LLC to broaden its availability to Spanish-speaking parents.
