Northwest Media Gets Grant for More Advanced Parenting Workshops

April 27, 2012

Eugene, OR — Northwest Media, Inc., parent company of FosterParentCollege.com, has received a three year $1.47 million grant to complete and evaluate five online training workshops to help foster-adoptive and kinship parents understand and cope with behavior problems of children ages 3 to 10. The Phase II SBIR grant was awarded by the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development.

The workshops explore the impact of complex trauma on the child's behavior and teach a core set of parenting constructs from a proven-effective parenting program, Nurturing Parenting Programs.

Behavioral problems that will be addressed in these online workshops are:

  • Defiance and disobedience
  • Self-harm and suicidal behavior
  • Social and physical aggression targeting people and/or property
  • Sexual misbehavior
  • Stealing

The workshop structure was developed in Phase 1 and those initial workshops are currently available as Advanced Parenting Workshops on FosterParentCollege.com. Workshops automate and integrate media components, including video, audio, text, interactive exercises, individualized response exercises, and a participant discussion board.

Study results from Phase 1 showed that three months after completing a workshop a majority of parents continue to use what they learned and feel the lessons helped them parent more effectively. The full research report is available on northwestmedia.com.

FosterParentCollege.com provides interactive online training for foster, adoptive and kinship parents. There are more than 30 courses available at this time. Titles include Substance-Exposed Infants, Child Abuse and Neglect, Grief and Loss in the Care System, Culturally Competent Parenting, and Child Safety and Supervision.
