House Safety Teaches Inspection Skills for Foster Homes

January 30, 2009

Eugene, OR — Foster parents often forget that their home is now a state-licensed or certified residential care facility subject to safety inspections at any time. House Safety, a recently released FosterParentCollege.com (FPC) class, helps parents prepare their home to pass inspection.

Michael Quinn, a 25-year-veteran social agency professional, guides parents through a virtual 10-station tour and inspection of a typical foster home. He looks for dangerous conditions that might go unnoticed until seen as a safety hazard to children - everything from the temperature of hot tap water to unsecured old freezers. Parents assume the role of regulator with self-scout house inspections, noting deficiencies and making necessary corrections or repairs.

This course offers home safety tips and compliance tools including:

  • self-inspection checklists
  • unusual problems
  • main inspection stations
  • yard and pool safety
  • charts for self-scout inspections

Michael Quinn, MA, is a Supervising Social Worker for Nepenthean Homes FFA in Fair Oaks, California.

House Safety runs 52 minutes and includes interactive exercises, handouts, and a questionnaire. For more information or to watch a short preview visit fosterparentcollege.com or call 800-777-6636.
