The courses listed here are intended for people who are considering becoming foster, adoptive, or kinship parents. The agency that you choose to work with will have a series of classes that you must attend and complete to become certified as a resource parent. FPC classes will help you meet your agency's requirements only if you arrange that in advance with the agency.
Advanced Parenting Workshops explore parenting concepts in depth and teach problem solving skills. The workshops are self-paced, span three weeks, have a specific start and end date, and sessions are posted twice a week. Workshops begin with an audio/video presentation then focus on skill building with assignments, exercises and an online discussion board. With guidance by the instructor and teaching assistants, participants work together to create an action plan for the case study family.
Completion of a workshop yields 6 training credits and a Certificate of Completion.
Similar in delivery to our self-paced courses for parents but designed for social workers, Agency Staff Training Courses teach important skills for supporting youth and caregivers. Participants who finish the course will receive a Certificate of Completion from Foster Parent College.
As of June of 2008, National CASA officially recognized the Foster Parent College.com classes towards the CASA/GAL volunteer's annual training requirements. As advocates, we are in a unique position to make a difference, both in how a child's life is managed while in care and in what a child returns to upon reunification. The more educated we are about issues in the lives of the children and their families, the more effective we will be as advocates. I am impressed by the quality and convenience of Foster Parent College classes and feel confident recommending them to all volunteers.
